Pre-Season Friendly

Canberra FC had it's last pre-season friendly before the 2009 Federation Cup starts and it was against another big club the Melbourne Knights, the ex NSL champions came to town to also have a hit out before the Victorian League starts.

Infront of a good crowd the Melbourne Knights took the match 2-1 and speaking with ex Canberra FC player and now with Melbourne Knights Maty Grbesa said it was a good match with both sides going out there for a win.

Pre-Season Friendly

Canberra FC and Sydney United....50 years and still going strong.

Canberra FC vs Sydney United Feb 14th at Deakin Stadium 2009.

In a pre-season friendly match the two oldest Croatian backed clubs in Australia hit it out, long history for both clubs so it was very fitting that the game ended up in a 1-1 draw and with both teams nearing the season proper in their leagues it was a good time to see where the players are at for both coaches. Miro Trninic of Canberra FC would have been happy with his sides performance and Ante Milicic would have been pleased with the away performance.

Sydney United pass on their thanks to Canberra FC for their support over the last 50 years.

New stadium in construction

The newly renamed Canberra FC (formerly Croatia Deakin Canberra) paid host to one of its favourite sons last Friday, when former Socceroo Captain Ned Zelic popped in to check on the progress of the club's new stadium.

Zelic , currently with the Newcastle Jets in the Hyundai A-League, has returned to Australia after more than a decade abroard, after having played at the highest level in both Europe and Asia.

The former Canberra Deakin junior was impressed with the plans for the brand new stadium, which will be located on the site of the old ground, adjacent to the lavish Deakin Football club.

He even got down and dirty, helping Canberra FC president Marko Vrkic unscrew the bolts from the massive floodlighting towers, which will be brought down to make way for new and upgraded floodlights.

According to Vrkic , work is progressing on the stadium ahead of schedule.

"The biggest obstacle we were faced with was the underground drainage and sewage system. That took up a lot of our time and money. Now that's taken care of, we expect the stadium to be complete by the end of the year; well and truly in time for season 2007" he explained.

Zelic, meanwhile, has told club officials he intends to help out at the club where he started his life as a footballer, in some capacity, once his playing career ends.
